Michael Counahan is Managing Director of CHL Consulting Company. CHL was established in 1984 and offers a comprehensive range of consultancy and project management services in the fields of tourism, cultural heritage, the arts, and education. It has conducted projects in more than 60 countries. He has more than 30 consecutive years of professional experience in tourism destination planning and development at national, regional and local levels. In addition to completing numerous projects in Ireland, North and South, he has worked in many European countries as well as in the Caribbean, South-East Asia and the Middle East. Michael’s work in destination development encompasses strategic and business planning, marketing and market research, economic analysis, and project review and management. He has been closely involved with the Titanic Belfast project since 2004, first having assembled and led the team that originally devised it and subsequently acting as project coordinator through the detailed design planning, funding, operations planning, and pre-opening operations stages. He continues to work with the project as a member of the Titanic Belfast Steering Group.Michael studied economics at Trinity College Dublin and holds a post-graduate degree in law. He is a fellow of the Institute of Management Consultants and Advisers, and is a past-president of that Institute. From 2003 to 2005 he was president of the Irish Exporters Association whose members account for some 70% of Irish exports. He is an advisor to a number of arts organisations, and is a member of the advisory board of Glenstal Abbey School, recently identified as Ireland's top school by the Sunday Times Parent Power Survey.
