The Organisation

Engaging over one million visitors annually with a national collection of outstanding significance globally, the National Museum of Ireland is Ireland’s largest national cultural institution consisting of four museums situated in Dublin and Mayo – NMI- Decorative Arts and History at Collins Barracks, NMI – Archaeology at Kildare Street, NMI – Natural History Museum on Merrion Street and NMI – Country Life in Turlough Park and the Collections Resource Centre in North County Dublin.

NMI operates under the aegis of the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sports and Media. The Vision of the museum is to be a museum of international quality, preserving and presenting the stories of Ireland and its place in the world. Its current strategic plan, Building Capacity, Driving Change 2019 – 2021 seeks to mobilise the museum to make that vision a reality. The Estates function is key to delivering on this vision.

The Role

The role of Head of Estates is a key role within the NMI and is responsible for the overall leadership and management of the Estate function, its day-to-day operations and the facilities and security department team members, which includes up to 70 staff. They will also contribute to the strategic development and leadership of NMI through membership of NMI’s Management Committee and contribute to the long-term development of the NMI estate, planning for the future development.

In addition, the role will have responsibility for developing the required internal and external relationships and oversee the development and leadership of the front of house role of the facilities and visitor services team to provide a world class visitor experience.

The Person

An enthusiastic and proactive individual with proven leadership and management skills, including people management skills, interpersonal and communication skills and team-working and collaboration ability. The successful candidate will also possess a working knowledge and experience of safety and emergency management principles, facilities and security standards and procedures and strong ICT proficiency. The role will also require a person with experience of devising and implementing business plans and with a strong strategic vision.

Required Experience:

Essential Requirements

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate evidence of:

  • A third-level qualification in a relevant discipline or subject and a minimum of five years satisfactory relevant leadership experience in at least one of the following areas: architecture, engineering, surveying, buildings management, facilities & security management, security, health and safety management.
  • Proven management skills, including people management skills, interpersonal and communication skills and team-working and collaboration ability.
  • Experience of financial management and experience of devising/implementing business plans.
  • Working knowledge and experience with safety management principles, systems and standards.
  • Experience of developing and implementing security policies and procedures.
  • Experience of devising disaster and emergency plans and knowledge of risk management.
  • Proven ability in managing maintenance and capital work programmes, including project management skills.
  • Experience of procurement and contract management, particularly in the public sector.
  • Proven record of ICT skills.
  • A flexible and adaptable individual concerning working hours. While this position typically requires attendance from Monday – Friday, there are occasions where evening and weekend working may be required, sometimes at short notice.

  • Excellent organisational and analytical skills with strong attention to detail and the ability to identify solutions.
  • A positive, enthusiastic, flexible and proactive approach to work allied with an ability to deliver.
  • Experience in the museum, gallery, heritage or culture sectors.
  • Ability to prioritise and manage workloads and to cope with conflicting demands.
  • Experience of drafting strategies, policies, reports and plans.
